Psalm Fourteen: The Refuge of the Lord

Psalm 14

The fool says in his heart,

    “There is no God.”
They are corrupt, their deeds are vile;
    there is no one who does good.

The Lord looks down from heaven

    on all mankind
to see if there are any who understand,
    any who seek God.
All have turned away, all have become corrupt;
    there is no one who does good,
    not even one.
Do all these evildoers know nothing?
They devour my people as though eating bread;

    they never call on the Lord.
But there they are, overwhelmed with dread,
    for God is present in the company of the righteous.
You evildoers frustrate the plans of the poor,
    but the Lord is their refuge.
Oh, that salvation for Israel would come out of Zion!

    When the Lord restores his people,
    let Jacob rejoice and Israel be glad!
-
David is giving us a parallel here. We see two people described here. There is the person who says that there is no God and the person who says that there is. One person never calls on the Lord and is overwhelmed with dread. The other person, is in the company of the Lord and finds refuge in Him. We get to choose which person we will be. We will be either a person who turns from the Lord; who says there is no God. Or, we will be the person who rests in the refuge of the Lord. The Psalm ends with the words, "when the Lord restores his people". That is beautiful. It doesn't say "if" the Lord restores his people, it says "when". There will be a day when the people of the Lord will be restored. so we can rest secure in the shelter of the Lord today! That is where I want to be.

What stood out to you in this Psalm?
How are you resting in the shelter and refuge of God today?
