Psalm Twenty-Four: The Earth is the Lord's

Psalm 24

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it,
    the world, and all who live in it;

for he founded it on the seas
    and established it on the waters.

Who may ascend the mountain of the Lord?
    Who may stand in his holy place?

The one who has clean hands and a pure heart,
    who does not trust in an idol
    or swear by a false god.

They will receive blessing from the Lord
    and vindication from God their Savior.

Such is the generation of those who seek him,
    who seek your face, God of Jacob.

Lift up your heads, you gates;
    be lifted up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.

Who is this King of glory?
    The Lord strong and mighty,
    the Lord mighty in battle.

Lift up your heads, you gates;
    lift them up, you ancient doors,
    that the King of glory may come in.

Who is he, this King of glory?
    The Lord Almighty
    he is the King of glory.
-
Oh my word! This is such a beautiful song of praise! I love how it begins by declaring that the world and everything in it belongs to the Lord. There is so much comfort in that. Our world is in God's hands and under his control. Our lives are in God's hands and under his control. Toward the end of the Psalm, David poses a question and asks who is this king that is ruling over our world. Then, he answers himself and says that our king is a king of glory, a king who is strong, and a king who is mighty! This is who is ruling our world. When we are weak, let us look to our king who is strong. When we are exhausted, let us look to our king who is mighty! "The Lord Almighty - he is the king of glory"!

What stood out to you in this Psalm?
How do you feel about God being our king?
